IHBE is thrilled to announce an exciting new study abroad program in Southeast Asia, where students will be studying Building-Integrated Agriculture. This will be an 8-week summer term program, jointly delivered by the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Environment and the Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences. The first four weeks will consist of virtual preparatory classes and the remaining time will be spent primarily in Singapore with a short stay in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This study abroad program will provide students with collaborative, interdisciplinary opportunities to research and design ways of producing food in and on buildings using Singapore—one of the most forward-thinking societies on Building-Integrated Agriculture—as a model. Later, they will apply lessons learned to a local site in the United States to help designers, engineers, and food producers realize these ideas at home. In doing so, they will address pressing issues of food security and equity, urban livability, human and environmental health, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
