University of Oregon’s monthly research and innovation newsletter, Pursuit, features an article about an exciting project from the Institute for Health in the Built Environment (IHBE): acoustic mushrooms! IHBE co-director, Mark Fretz, and fifth-year architecture student, Charlotte Kamman, are working together to tackle the issue of excessive sound transmission through wood surfaces. They are exploring the possibility of using sound panels made from mycelium-based composite (MBC) materials. Not only does their research show promise for creating a sustainable and eco-friendly sound-dampening solution, but they also found edible mushrooms growing during the production process!
