Dr. Gwynne Mhuireach is a Research Assistant Professor in the Institute for Health in the Built Environment and acts as the Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Institute’s industry research consortium, Build Health. She began working in the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory in 2008, during her first year of the M.Arch program. With her undergraduate background in Biology, Gwynne soon became involved in studies of the indoor microbiome with the Biology and the Built Environment Center, which eventually blossomed into a deep and abiding interest in how microbes can mediate relationships between human health and the design of the built environment—an unseen aspect of biophilia. She teaches courses in both Landscape Architecture and Architecture, and conducts grant-funded research on microbial ecology of building materials, soil, air, and food. She is also passionate about local food systems and the role they play in urban resilience. This passion is reflected in her collaborative efforts with OSU Horticulture and the National Urban Research & Extension Center (NUREC) to advance Building-Integrated AgricultureOutside of her academic work, Gwynne owns and operates a small livestock farm on the outskirts of Springfield.
