Student Opportunities
The Institute for Health in the Built Environment interacts with interested students in various ways:
-
- We support students through independent studies for credit. This can vary in the number of credits and scope of project.
- We have a very limited number of GE positions every year, which are a more serious time commitment (usually 20 hours/week), but we generally reserve these positions for PhD students or M.Arch students in year 2 or later of their studies, to make sure the demands of the position do not conflict with coursework.
- We hire students hourly, at less than 10 hours per week (graduate or undergraduate). This is generally a good fit for both sides, as you can still juggle a full course load while getting involved in research. Our work often ends with publication and offers the possibility of co-authorship. These positions are listed below.
BioBE Lab Assistant
Project lead: Gwynne?
This position will assist researchers on projects in our wetlab that involve one or more of the following areas: soil composition, agriculture, impact of different agricultural interventions on health, measures of health related to building metrics.
Possible areas where you will be assisting researchers include, but are not limited to the following:
-
- Assisting in wetlab: preparing samples, labeling, storing
- We will work to assure that you gain experience using the various wetlab tools
- Literature review
- Recording data
- Writing web/social media content
- Taking and recording measurements for ongoing projects
- Construction of models or prototypes, under supervision of researcher
IHBE Lab Assistant
Project lead: Mark Fretz
This position will assist researchers on projects that involve one or more of the following areas: building indoor environmental quality, energy performance, durability, life cycle analysis, and/or measures of health related to building design, construction and operation.
Possible areas where you will be assisting researchers include, but are not limited to the following:
-
- Literature review
- Data entry
- Writing web/social media content
- Taking and recording measurements for ongoing projects
- Construction of models or prototypes, under supervision of researcher
Baker Lab Assistant
Project lead: Siobhan Rockcastle
This position will assist researchers on projects that involve one or more of the following areas: lighting, building view or aesthetics, visual media, virtual reality, and/or measures of health related to any of these metrics.
Possible areas where you will be assisting researchers include, but are not limited to the following:
-
- Literature review
- Data entry
- Organizing lab equipment and conducting inventories
- Writing web/social media content
- Taking and recording measurements for ongoing projects
- Construction of models or prototypes, under supervision of researcher
If you have questions about any of the above, or would like to express interest, please send an email to esbl@uoregon.edu detailing what type of interaction you’re interested in (independent studies, GE position, hourly work), your major field of study, and your specific interest in working with the lab
Program Information
The Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratories (ESBL) and Institute for Health in the Built Environment (IHBE) is an interdisciplinary team whose research spans expertise in architectural design, building performance, energy efficiency, building science and engineering, building acoustics, indoor microbiology, and indoor air quality. ESBL and IHBE collaborate within the University of Oregon College of Design and School of Architecture and Environment. Our main goals are to reduce the energy consumption of buildings and improve the health and well-being of building inhabitants.
