The Institute for Health in the Built Environment utilizes acoustic testing equipment that can test for impact insulation class (IIC) and sound transmission class (STC). STC tests assess how well a wall assembly acoustically separates two spaces, while IIC measures how well a floor assembly dampens the sound transmission of impact between two adjacent spatial volumes for example footstep or a dropped object. This equipment can be used in existing buildings to see how well they are performing acoustically or to test new building assemblies in a controlled environment.
