Can your office or home lighting be optimized for your health? We think so!

While research on circadian rhythms and light has been ongoing for years now, we are looking closer into lighting in buildings and approaching it from a human-centric perspective, rather than a spatial perspective. For example- if the lighting by the windows is optimal, but occupants don’t spend much time next to the windows, they will not be getting optimal lighting.

We tracked 38 building occupants and collected data on where they were in the building at various times of day. Running that data through a lighting simulator, we could estimate their light exposure levels.
By tracking human behavior, we can get more accurate ideas about how light really impacts occupants, not just spaces. This approach opens new doors to lighting simulations that can be applied to optimize occupant health.  Eventually, your daily office space may help you sleep well at night!
